With the impending implementation of the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare”, businesses are already forecasting staffing layoffs and hour reductions for remaining staff. These cuts are to offset the cost associated with the health insurance they will be mandated to provide.
Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter, a open supporter of Mitt Romney, has stated that he can imagine franchisees of his pizza parlors reducing the head count of their staff and the hours of employees. He also said he “may have to pass on the cost to the consumer.” Now there is a growing boycott of his company already estimated to be 40 million people strong. They feel that because Schnatter spends money on advertising and is worth $200 million dollars, he should be able to provide health care to his employees effortlessly.
I don’t understand what a CEO’s personal wealth has to do with the provisional benefits he provides to employees. Barack Obama is worth nearly $12 million dollars and he asks you to donate money during his perpetual Presidential campaign. I’ve read some very biased reports on Papa John’s, demonizing the chain for openly stating that reductions will be carried out to maintain profitable. Papa John’s is not alone when predicting the adverse affects Obamacare will ignite.
New York area Applebee’s CEO Zane Tankel, known for engineering the highest grossing Applebee’s in the world, has said that the restaurant chain may be forced to fire employees because of the government mandate. When speaking with the Fox Business Network on Thursday Tankel suggested “We’ve calculated it will [cost] some millions of dollars across our system. So what does that say — that says we won’t build more restaurants. We won’t hire more people,”. An onslaught of negative comments toward Tankel and the chain populated the feeds of Twitter users immediately. Dealing with the mandates of Obamacare which requires that businesses with more than 50 employees must offer approved health insurance or pay a penalty of $2,000 for each full-time employee over 30 employees has brought about Tankel’s predictions.
I do not understand why we are so outraged and surprised by the negative affects of Obamacare. The world has been saying the cost of Obamacare would cripple businesses and pass the buck onto the consumer’s wallet. Why are you so surprised? Why are you outraged at CEO’s and corporate executives? The problem lies with the government mandate enacted by President Barack Obama. If you wanted to start a boycott against rising cost and job loss, why didn’t you boycott the President on November 6th at your polling places?
